Open Journal Systems,
and everything after it.

Open Journal Systems gets your journal online. OJSPlus carries it the rest of the way — DOIs, reference checking, similarity screening, JATS XML, metadata deposits, DOAJ readiness, and AI-assisted quality review, in one publishing-grade pipeline.

Built on open standards — Crossref, ORCID, OAI-PMH and JATS XML. No lock-in.

The foundation

Two decades of opening scholarship to everyone

Open Journal Systems was first released in 2001 by the Public Knowledge Project, a research initiative founded by John Willinsky and now based at Simon Fraser University. The idea was radical in its simplicity: give any scholarly community — not only large commercial publishers — the means to run a rigorous, peer-reviewed, open-access journal, for free.

Two decades on, OJS is the quiet infrastructure behind an enormous share of the world's open scholarship. It powers more than 25,000 active journals across over 120 countries, a great many of them independent, society-run, or based far outside the traditional publishing centres, publishing in dozens of languages. No other platform has done more to make scholarly publishing accessible.

OJSPlus is built on that foundation, with deep respect for it. We don't replace OJS — we stand on it, and add the production muscle and integrity tooling that a small editorial team can't easily build alone.

The platform gives you a journal.
We give you a publishing house.

Hosting is the starting line. Everything that earns a journal its standing — persistent identifiers, verified references, clean metadata, indexing readiness — is the work that comes after. OJSPlus does that work, on every article, every issue.

The work that turns a manuscript
into a trusted article

Integrity

Reference checking

Every DOI in every reference list is resolved against Crossref before review. Broken, mismatched, and fabricated citations are flagged automatically.

powered by CheckRef
Production

Typesetting & XML

Production-grade article layout and full JATS XML for every accepted paper — press-ready PDFs and machine-readable content every index can ingest.

Crossref integration

DOI registration and metadata deposit handled for you, so every article is citable and discoverable from the day it goes live — with cited-by links flowing back in.

Similarity screening

Plagiarism and similarity checking through iThenticate and Turnitin — the standards trusted by major publishers and institutions — built directly into your editorial workflow, with reports beside the submission.

AI integration

Modern AI woven into the workflow — reviewer matching, summaries, language and integrity assists — used transparently, to support editorial judgement, never to replace it.

…and more

Cover design, DOI back-filling, archiving, migrations from other platforms, custom themes — if your journal needs it, we can take it on.

From submission to publication,
instrumented end to end

  1. 01

    Submission

Author submits in OJS; metadata and ORCID captured up front.

Similarity check and reference parsing run automatically.

  3. 03

    Peer review

Editors review inside the existing workflow, now instrumented.

Infrastructure that holds the scholarly record

HTTPS everywhere

TLS on every endpoint, enforced at the proxy level.

Encrypted backups

Automated, GPG-encrypted, daily/weekly/monthly retention.

2FA-ready

Two-factor authentication for all editorial accounts.

Monitoring

Uptime and integrity monitored continuously via push alerts.

Secrets management

Credentials isolated with Docker secrets; never in environment variables.

Docker isolation

Services containerised and isolated; no-new-privileges enforced.

Disaster recovery

Tested restore procedures with defined RPO and RTO targets.

Assistance that defers
to editors

AI handles the repetitive checks — structure, metadata, references, readiness — and hands editors clear, evidence-backed findings. It recommends; people decide. Nothing is published on a machine's say-so.

  • Structural and metadata checks before an article reaches an editor
  • Reference and citation consistency flagged for human confirmation
  • Readiness gaps explained in plain language, with the fix attached
  • Every automated finding is evidence-linked and editor-reviewable
